Playing on the same side and catalysing change
February 12th, 2015
For Rio 2016, sustainability is more than just words. It is a concrete opportunity to catalyse positive change for Rio de Janeiro and throughout Brazil. We simply cannot organize the largest global sporting event on our own.
To stage truly memorable Games, we need to be clearly aligned with our partners, suppliers, sponsors, employees and volunteers. We need the buy in from local, state and federal government, private enterprises and NGOs. And above all, we need to foster good relationships.
One factor highly-prized by Rio 2016 is the dialogue with the society, initiated in 2013 and scheduled right through to the end of the Games. We have already conducted two rounds of dialogue, listening to what stakeholders had to say regarding our sustainability initiatives. Based on suggestions made, Rio 2016 has created an action plan for high-impact topics.
One of the ideas put forward was to deepen the conversation by organizing theme-based discussions on specific topics. Since the second half of 2014, we have held meetings to discuss acessibilily, child rights–protection, transparency/accountability and diversity and inclusion.
In addition to these dialogue channels, we have set up other media channels through which we report on Rio 2016’s sustainability actions. You will find a series of documents and reports on our website, and an email address that you can use to contact us with any queries you may have.
We understand that maintaining close relations with our stakeholders is fundamental to the transparency and management of the Games. In addition, it supports the creation of a network in which organisations can work together towards common targets that will remain after the Games.
