Pioneering and sustainability

From a corporate point of view, the sustainability report is a transparency tool that is widely used in the market, and the most common model is the Global Reporting Initiative, known as GRI. In spite of the popularity of these reports, in the events sector these are a relatively recent development, having initiated in 2010 at the Vancouver Winter Games.

Published in Septmber 2014, the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games sustainability report is the first document of its kind to be published by the organizing committee of a large event in Brazil. It covers the period 2012-2013 and reports on 75 indicators, grouped into three overall themes: economic, environmental and social, and is subdivided into specific themes, such as economic performance, water consumption and human rights, for example.

One differentiating factor of the Games’ report is that, in addition to reporting on what was done in terms of sustainability in 2012 and 2013, it also gives the next steps for the following two years. That is, beyond showing what was done, it is an excellent tool for the external public to check whether what is being proposed is really being carried out by the Rio 2016 Committee.

Two other sustainability reports will also be published by Rio 2016. The first of these corresponds to the organization period (2012-2013). The second report will be published at the start of 2016, and will report on the execution period (2014 and 2015). The third and final report will be published at the start of 2017, and will report on the delivery and take-down of the Games.
