Developing suppliers for the market

One of Rio 2016’s management principles is to transform challenges into opportunities for the city and country. For the procurement area, using the Olympic and Paralympic Games’ demand is a great chance to stimulate the sustainable development of the domestic market. Thus, Rio 2016 sees the opportunity to raise the capacity and qualify micro and small enterprises as potential Games suppliers.

However, it would be a challenge task to train around 2,000 possible suppliers in all kinds of sectors in such a short time. To make this mission possible, in 2013 Rio 2016 signed a technical cooperation agreement with training institute Sebrae. Through the “Sebrae no Pódio” programme, suppliers are trained and qualified to meet not only the Games’ demands, but also the increasingly stringent demands of the market in general.

Sebrae no Pódio operates in two areas: the development of micro and small companies to supply directly Rio 2016; and the qualification of companies to work in the Games’ production chain. The process takes place through “business round” meetings involving Rio 2016, Sebrae, a hired company and micro and small enterprises interested in subcontracting.

To take part in the programme, the entrepreneurs should contact Sebrae in their state or attend the events organised by Sebrae no Pódio. After an initial diagnosis to evaluate the company’s management level, Sebrae offers support through consultancy and training to enable it to qualify as a Games supplier.

All companies selected as potential Games suppliers also receive UNSPSC classification – an international product and service standardisation code endorsed by the United Nations. This code permits commercial transactions that use an international standard, facilitating the respective companies’ entry into new markets, and thereby raising their potential for sales and profitability.
