Rio 2016 supports Green Passport campaign
December 4th, 2015
The Rio 2016 Committee announced last October 15th, its endorsement of the Green Passport campaign, a UNEP (United Nations Environmental Program) that promotes sustainable tourism. The event took place at the Museum of the Environment, in the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden.
By means of a digital platform as well as a smartphone app, The Green Passport encourages tourists to adopt more conscientious attitudes, which respect the destination of choice, the regional culture, besides contributing towards the local socioeconomic development.
“ The partnership with the Green Passport strengthens our ability to promote positive change in people. We want to leave the responsibility concerning the environment as yet another part of the legacy of the Games. We will reduce to a minimum any type of environmental impact on the city, and the awareness on the part of tourists is essential in order to fulfill this commitment”, says Tania Braga, Sustainability General Manager at the Rio 2016 Committee.
A guide featuring authentic tours in Rio de Janeiro is also available on the platform. Up until the beginning of the Games, the smartphone app will get updates on how to take advantage of the city in a conscientious manner during the competitions.
According to Carlos Arthur Nuzman, “examples of sustainability are some of the great legacies of the Rio Games”. He went on to declare that the International Olympic Committee is concerned with sustainability, which is one of the key pillars in the organization of the Olympic Games.
The event
A tree made by hand out of twigs and branches collected from the streets of the city was the central attraction of the party. Guests were free to leave their commitments to the environment hanging from the tree.
Another space also attracted people’s attention during the event. An athlete’s model room offered tips on how to leave your home behind when you go on a trip, besides reminding us of simple everyday habits that make a difference for the environment and for people.
