Facts and figures about the sustainability of the Games

Delivering Olympic and Paralympic Games is a complex activity. Delivering sustainable Games is even more complex. Behind the curtains, sustainability supports each action, from the planning until the dissolution phase, to generate less impact. Check out some facts and figures of how sustainability is supporting the Games:

WHITE ELEPHANT

The competition venues are located in four regions of Rio de Janeiro (Barra da Tijuca, Copacabana, Deodoro and Maracanã) in order to make the most of existing structures and avoiding white elephants. From all competition venues, 71% of the building area (in square meters) are of existing structures, while 17% are of temporary structures, and 12% are of new structures.

ISO 20.121

The sustainability management system of the Games was implemented to guarantee that Rio 2016 has an efficient operation, and complies with ISO 20.121, the sustainability standard for events. The certification process, including engagement of employees and external audit, will be carried out throughout 2015.

TASTE OF THE GAMES

Taste of the Games is the strategy for sustainable and healthy food for Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Some of the strategies are: support for small producers to supply for the Games, use of tracking systems for the safety and origin of food, prioritization of local and national markets in supplying healthy and sustainable foods, and engagement of the spectators towards healthy nutrition and healthy living.

DID YOU KNOW?

The non-certified wood emits 204 kg CO2/m3. On the other side, certified wood emits 14 kg CO2/m3. Rio 2016 hires only suppliers with the chain of custody certification. This certification ensures the sustainability throughout the process, since timber extraction, the transformation into a product and sale to final consumer.
