SUSTAINABILITY IN THE TORCH RELAY

A new cycle of history for Brazilian sport will begin today with the Olympic Torch Relay on Brazilian soil. Did you know that before coming to Brazil, the flame was lit on 21 April in Olympia, Greece? This happens at all editions of the Games and then, after spending seven days on Greek land, the torch arrives in the host country.

With the arrival of the flame in Brasilia, the relay will cross the entire country, embracing the warmth of the Brazilian people, through our traditions and cultures. We will broadcast the Olympic values throughout the entire journey, until the torch’s arrival in Rio de Janeiro.

The torch will spend over three months crossing roads, towns and countryside. We will unite peoples, races and beliefs. The Olympic torch will travel through 323 Brazilian cities.

Rio 2016 will hitch a ride in the warmth of the torch and tell the world the different journeys of Brazilians from the four corners of our country. The reality of a people who have battled for their land and their origins. We will introduce people with inspiring stories of sustainability and a new vision of legacy for future generations.

Among those indicated, the Organising Committee has chosen 28 Brazilians involved with sustainability in the country to carry the Olympic torch. These people were chosen because of the part they play in their communities and they now have the task of telling the population of their actions, for a more sustainable Brazil.

With the help of the institutional partners of the Abraça Programme, we managed to meet characters that will raise issues involving sustainability in our country.
