RIO 2016 RECEIVES ISO 20121 CERTIFICATION

This morning , Rio 2016 President Carlos Arthur Nuzman received from Vera Nunes, Chair of SGS, a plaque confirming ISO 20121 certification on behalf of the Olympic and Paralympic Games organising committee.

ISO is an international non-governmental organisation that develops international standards for different markets. Created in 2012, ISO 20121 establishes sustainability criteria for the event organisation sector, providing guidance and best practice for organisations to work in a sustainable manner, controlling their social, environmental and economic impacts through planning and good management.

Rio 2016 thanks all its employees who have often had to adapt projects, extend deadlines and rethink ideas, but have always maintained our event’s commitment to society and the environment. This certification is tangible evidence of the way we think, plan and execute.

“We went through a very thorough external audit which certified that we are serious about sustainability assuming good management practices. This will be a legacy for the events sector. What we have done here is unprecedented in Brazil,” said Nuzman.

With the ISO 20121 certification, Rio 2016 has joined a select group of internationally recognised companies.

For Rio 2016 Sustainability Manager Julie Duffus, this achievement reflects the synergy between the different areas of the organising ommittee. “It has been a challenging situation, of course, but we have managed to involve all parties, from internal employees to suppliers,” she said. “Sustainability is embedded in our processes and this certification proves it.”
