RIO 2016 AND CHILDHOOD BRASIL TOGETHER FOR CHILD PROTECTION
June 15th, 2016
The Rio 2016 Committee and the Childhood Brazil have joined together together in support of a worthy cause: the protection of children and adolescents in Brazil. Let’s take advantage of the visibility of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to put this matter on the current agenda. We couldn’t work on this vital issue alone. Therefore, it is important to have with us partners of credibility and expertise. Since 2013, the Organising Committee and Childhood Brazil have formed a solid partnership that has generated significant results for qualified inclusion of this issue in Rio 2016 Games operations.
Day by day this work consists of the inclusion of qualified content about the theme across the different Rio 2016 channels and in organisation of the “Thematic rounds of child and adolescent protection “. The rounds are a means of promoting, on a voluntary basis, monthly meetings with other expert organisations on this theme and to strengthen the role of the Integral Protection Committee of the Child and Adolescent Rights from Rio de Janeiro for mega events. This Committee is a local body which brings together different stakeholders in order to ensure the rights of children and adolescents during mega events, and to discuss public policy that will remain as a legacy. The Local Committee created a macro protection network involving government bodies and public security, justice system, civil society and international organisations.
By invitation of the Organising Committee, Childhood Brazil agreed to facilitate the thematic round of child and adolescent protection, gathering suggestions and information from all involved, so that the actions of the Integral Protection Committee may align the communication and engagement of the population in the protection of children and adolescents’ rights during the Rio 2016 Games.
Issues considered in rounds:
Children and adolescents’ protection during competitions, identifying risks, opportunities and solutions in Live Site operations (areas of entertainment for the public outside the areas of the Games), next to the Municipal Olympic Company.
Alignment of strategies and actions in cases of violation of children and adolescents’ rights inside Rio 2016 areas.
Unification of communication by different children and adolescents’ rights institutions during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Strengthening of “Disque 100” and “Proteja Brazil” app, official channels of complaint for violation cases.
Support Integral Protection Committee in the development of an observatory for children and adolescents’ rights.
Establishment of an environment for the exchange of ideas and construction of dialogue bridges for a childhood free of violence.
Participation in institutional events that seek to insert the topic into relevant discussion spaces.
Rio 2016 works for the implementation of the actions proposed in meetings and considers the theme one of extreme relevance, considering the special time for the country, while Rio de Janeiro will be a great showcase for the world. We want to leave as a legacy the opportunities identified in this partnership and bring this matter to the attention of society and other host countries of the Olympic Games, as a recurring theme at major international events.
