RIO 2016 VOLUNTEERS APPROVE NEW ITINERARIES FOR GREEN PASSPORT

How about being “called” to visit a gorgeous trail in the Cidade Maravilhosa? Rio 2016, in partnership with UNEP – United Nations Environment –, is promoting the “Rio 2016 Games Green Passport”, a campaign of communication and engagement for sustainable tourism. Spectators coming to Rio de Janeiro will have the opportunity to explore places that represent the peculiarities of the carioca people from authentic itineraries suggested on the site and app.

Leave classic Rio de Janeiro treks behind, swapping the obvious for the unusual. This is the proposal of the Green Passport: show the real Rio de Janeiro to the population and tourists. Rio 2016, through the Abraça Programme, is helping make the experience of Games spectators even better.  By means of an invitation published on social networks, volunteers selected by the Committee will have the opportunity to have a genuine local experience, and contribute with their assessment about the suggestions of new itineraries in the host city of the Games.

Last weekend was the time to get to know the Cabritos 360° project, a tour that combines community-based tourism with more adventurous trails sought by “hikers”. The project, developed by CEESC – Social Eco Sports Centre Community– promotes a tour of the communities of Tabajaras and Cabritos, guided by community leaders qualified in 2015. The group was led from within the community towards the Mirante do Urubu and Maroca stone, peaks located in the highest part of the Morro dos Cabritos, from where you have a panoramic view of Rio. In this way you can come into contact with the community and understand their challenges.

Following the essence of the campaign “I take care of my destination,” there is nobody better than volunteers who will take part in the Rio 2016 Games to get to know these places.

“They are going to take care of the athletes, delegations, spectators and will help us in the success of this great event. This campaign is being developed for all who will be in Rio de Janeiro, whether they are cariocas or not. We will present the side of town that few know. From the favela there are many manifestations examples of carioca culture “, said Eduardo Freire, responsible for the Green Passport in the Abraça Programme.

Authentic options released by the campaign contribute to income generation in host communities, the exchange of social and cultural experiences, as well as the opportunity to see the city from another point of view. By the end of May, four other treks will be evaluated by the group.

While we prepare our next encounter, see pictures of Cabritos 360°.
