• Leticia Carvalho is only 12 years old but has already been through a lot. After a series of surgeries on her femur, she now has a prosthesis. Against all odds, she is now a local karate champion. "You can transform everything with joy," she says.

  • "Torch, where are you? We came here just to see you!" sung the kids from João Paulo 2nd school in Teixeiras de Freitas, who came prepared with dozens of replica torches.

  • Lay Ribeiro, a local nun, got a welcome worthy of a celebrity as she carried the torch in her community. The public chanted "Viva São Francisco" as she passed.
