Two former members of Brazil's women's football team were in action today in the Olympic Torch Relay. Former defender Suzy Bittencourt passed the torch to goalkeeper Mag Piovensan; it was like playing in a championship final again, Suzy said.

Bahian boxer Érica Mattos won 11 Brazilian titles, two Pan-American championships and one South American belt. She was also a member of the very first women's boxing team from Brazil to compete in the Olympic Games.

Jacqueline Mourão was the first Brazilian sportswoman to participate in the Summer Games and the Winter Games. She has represented Brazil in mountain bike and in cross country skiing. In Salvador she used roller skis in today's Olympic Torch Relay.

Rodrigo Menezes is a teacher at local sports project Vem Jogar + Eu. "The kids and I have waited for this moment for a long time. We think we are representing all of our community in Salvador," he says.

The Filhos de Gandhy (the sons of Gandhi) are Salvador's most famous carnival group, inspired by traditional African religions and the Indian icon. Olympic swimmer and torchbearer Allan do Carmo received their blessing and best wishes today.

Visually impaired footballer Jeferson da Conceição, better known as Jefinho, is a two-time Paralympic champion and considered by many the best of all time. "I'm Bahian, I'm Brazilian and I'm representing the joy of all of us," he said.

Marathon swimmer Allan do Carmo, who has already qualified for the Rio 2016 Games, was blessed in front of the Church of Senhor do Bonfim. "There was an amazing energy," he said. "I even danced, and I don't know how to dance!"

Alexandre Assis, better known as samba musician Xande de Pilares, is used to performing for big crowds, but being an Olympic torchbearer was something else. "I have never had such a warm reception, I feel like an athlete," he said.

The world-famous martial art/dance of capoeira orginated in Bahia, and Claudio Nunes de Souza, 61, took his group to perform in the state capital for the arrival of the torch. "The Olympic Torch Relay is like something from another planet," he said.

Marcelo Collet is a long-distance swimmer who in 2010 became the first Paralympic athlete to swim the English Channel. He opened the torch relay in Salvador, with the Olodum drummers providing the rhythym.
