The wonderful old paddle wheel steamboat, the Benjamim Guimarães, received an honoured guest today – Luiz Henrique with the Olympic Torch. Built in Pittsburgh in 1913, she first plied her trade on the Mississipi and Amazon before coming to Pirapora.

Iguaciena Sulamita used to be homeless and live in the streets. Even in those difficult days, she never gave up hope that one day things would improve. Now a cyclist and dancer, Iguaciena said she was representing the strength of Brazilian women.

Five years ago Thiago Bonfim lost his left leg in a road accident. Since then, he has found in powerlifting a way back to happiness and self-esteem. As a torchbearer in Pirapora, Thiago said his heart beat faster for all every one of his 200 metres.

Locals in Pirapora still use the waters of the São Francisco river to wash their clothes. The river, known as Velho Chico, plays a big part in Brazilian culture and folklore and has an important role in the economy.

Pirapora-born footballer Luiz Henrique represented Brazil in two Copa Américas, played for Flamengo, Fluminense and Bahia and even had a short spell with Monaco. The torchbearer is now hoping Brazil can win their first Olympic football gold.

Located on the magnificent San Francisco river, a historic paddle wheel steamboat is a favourite attraction in Pirapora. The town gets its poetical name from the indigenous Tupi language. Pirapora means jumping fish, a common sight on the river here.
