The relay ended its first leg in the state of Pernambuco with a ceremony in the town of Petrolina on the banks of the São Francisco River. Denise Cavalcanti, who has developed software to help victims of Alzheimer's, lit a special Olympic cauldron.

Mounted proudly on his ox Thunder, local farmer Antônio welcomes the Olympic Torch with a traditional greeting on his cowhorn. "I am very excited and I want to see the torch up close with Thunder."

Youtuber Eduardo Melo Pereira is already planning to make a special Olympic upload, following his moment of glory in the relay in Petrolina. "I want to show everyone all the emotions surrounding the torch," the excited 16-year-old said.

The Adventist Pathfinders of Petrolina were a big help at today's torch relay. The young church members helped organise the cordon around the torchbearers. All the youngsters volunteered to serve at the event.

Rio 2016 Olympic mascot Vinicius arrived early in Petrolina to check out the Sagrado Coração de Jesus Cathedral in Dom Malan Square, where the Olympic torch will pass through today.
