Even after losing a leg in an accident, Nathalia Virgínia Barbosa has remained a dedicated player of handball. "I have kept on training and playing even despite the sadness of losing my leg. This is the flame of life I carry within me."

Visually impaired from birth, Renan Bezerra has always played sport but it was in goalball he really stood out and at 15 he started competing anf winning titles, among them best player of 2015. "I am very happy as an athlete and goalball gives me the energy to overcome the difficulties in my life, for one accessibility in this country is still lacking. Carrying the Olympic flame is a reason to be very proud and happy to be recognised."

Cerebral palsy doesn't stop Bruna Dias from living an active life. She started playing sport as a child and competes in the javelin. "I am happy to be showing the world that people with an impairment can have an active and independent life."

Maria Clara is 20 years old. Since she was fifteen, she has been volunteering with young people and the elderly. "I like to help people," she says. "The best reward is the smile that they give me. The Olympic Torch will inspire me to continue."

The Olympic torch visits the coast of Paraíba capital João Pessoa, or Jampa as it is affectionately called. Our mascot Vinícius went ahead to top up his tan on the beautiful Tambaú beach, which is on the torch's itinerary.
