The 25th day of the Olympic Torch Relay was full of all the flavours of the northeast, from traditional music to figures from folklore and legend. The relay passed through the towns of Jaguarari, Juazeiro, Sobradinho and Petrolina.

The small Bahian town of Jaguarari pulled out all the stops to celebrate the arrival of the Olympic torch, culminating in a psychedelic dance performance in the town square that combined country line dancing with multi-coloured trousers and tutus.

Not long ago 23-year-old Lucas Jesus, better known in Jaguarari as Chiquinho, was living on the streets. A well-known local called Ferreirinha took him in and today he is a marathon runner who has got his life back on track.

Antonio Bonfim, 53, better known as Ferreirinha, founded a social programme that allows hundreds of kids in Jaguarari to practise sports. He received a hero's welcome as he ran with the Olympic torch.

The torch relay in Jaguarari finished with a performance of xaxado, a traditional dance that was popular among the cangaceiros, 19th century rural bandits who roamed the arid northeast of Brazil.

Five cattle rearers from the Caatinga shrubland eco-region in northeastern Brazil donned their traditional outfits and came to see the torch pass through Jaguarari.
