Joacy Verde was the first torchbearer in Itaberaí today. An accomplished runner in road events, he said this was the most important race of his life. "So many things went through my mind. It was undescribable," he said after his short run.

Itaberaí is cattle country. Local resident Antonio Cesar Caldas Pinheiro, who founded the town's academy of arts and letters, chose to carry the torch in an ox-drawn cart, a symbol of this proud agricultural land. "I felt very emotional looking at the public," he said.

The small town of Itaberaí is buzzing this morning. This will be the Olympic torch's first stop today. It's a big day in particular for cyclists from the local cycling club; leading member Carlos Magno is one of the town's nominated torchbearers.

Located 89km from the state capital Goiânia, the town of Itaberaí is host to the Rio 2016 Olympic Torch Relay. A visit to the town is a journey back in time to the interior of Brazil in the 18th century. Today home to some 35,000 people, Itaberaí developed along the banks of the Rio das Pedras, the river of stones; its name in the indigenous guarani language means 'river of bright stones'. The town is now one of Brazil's largest producers of grains. The main tourist attraction is the Nossa Senhora da Abadia church which dates back to 1824. Ecotourists, walkers and nature lovers will appreciate the hilly terrain surrounding the town and the many caves dotted along the ranges of Gongomé, Fazendinha and Lajes.
