In Canindé the catamaran is used to take tourists to discover the breathtaking scenery of the Xingó Canyon and this Saturday it provided crowds with perfect seats to witness the Olympic torch relay.

Images of Saint Francis of Assis (São Francisco de Assis) were placed at various places along the 65km-long canyon formed by the construction of the Usina Hidrelétrica de Xingó dam. The people of the region are devoted to the saint who lends his name to the river.

At 6 years old Antônio Filho lost his leg in a car accident. Even at that young age he decided to dedicate himself to sport. Carryin the torch in Canindé he was all smiles and the crowd responded with lots of applause. "You choose the life you want to lead, we have to look at all situations from a positive angle and not let our heads drop. My grandmother, who is a warrior, has always been my idol and so I dedicate this flame to her and to all of those without hope."

Vitória dos Santos attended the torch relay on stilts and alongside our mascot Vinícius accompanied the marching band Ecos e Santos de São Francisco as it welcomed the Olympic flame.

The Cauby Mota Centre for Judo in the city of Canindé de São Francisco had its students give a masterclass in the middle of the street as crowds waited for the Olympic torch to arrive.

Canindé de São Francisco
The Olympic flame started off this Saturday (28 May) in Canindé de São Francisco. The municipality is one of the most sought after tourist destinations in the state because of its canyon that was formed with the construction of the Usina Hidrelétrica de Xingó dam, which extends over 65 kilometres and is 170 in depth.
