Thousands of locals take to the streets as the Olympic torch bids farewell to the city of Bocaiuva. Next stop: Couto de Magalhães de Minas.
-
The last torchbearer in Bocaiuva was physical education teacher Carlos Oliveira, known as Killa. He is the driving force behind the internationally award-winning project Agita Bocaiuva (Get Bocaiuva Moving), which encourages locals to take up sport.
-
The volunteers are also an integral part of the torch relay. P.E. teachers Gisele Tavares and Jessica Emmanuele helped set up the cordon perimeter to keep the torch, the torchbearer and the Olympic flame safe as they continue their journey through the city of Bocaiuva.
-
Jiu-jitsu may not be an Olympic sport, but that didn't stop the girls of the Gastão Vale state school from getting into character to welcome the torch relay.
-
Astronomers from all over the world came to this country town in May 1947 to witness a solar eclipse. The event helped confirm the theory of relativity. Locals says Albert Einstein himself was here; sadly there is no independent proof of his visit.
