During the week in which Rio 2016 will celebrate one year until the Olympic Games, the third series of commemorative coins for the event will be launched. The penultimate batch of coins will be unveiled on Thursday (6 August) – the day after the one-year milestone.

Each of the four batches consists of four coins for regular use, each worth R$1 (one Brazilian real), plus, for collectors, four silver coins and one in gold. The second batch of R$1 circulation coins, released in April, paid homage to basketball, rugby, sailing and Paralympic canoeing. The new batch of R$1 coins will feature volleyball, judo, football and Paralympic athletics.

In the third batch, the silver coins will portray Rio landscapes where locals practise rowing, athletics, cycling and beach volleyball on one side, and on the other, a monkey, an orchid, the Sambódromo and an image featuring forró, a Brazil dance. The gold coin will feature the Christ the Redeemer statue on one side and wrestling on the reverse.
