Rio de Janeiro was chosen as the symbolic city for the second Brazilian edition of the Earth Hour. The illumination of various monuments and key-spots in the city, such as Christ Redeemer, the beach in Copacabana, Nossa Senhora da Penha Church, The Sugar Loaf Mountain and the Brazilian Jockey Club, will be switched off. This action will stimulate residents to also switch off their lights at home, for one hour.
Apart from Rio de Janeiro, 61 other Brazilian cities, including 15 capitals, will participate in the event. The Brazilians have been showing a growing ecological awareness. The concern with the environment is highly present in Rio de Janeiros Olympic project, and for this reason, the Rio 2016 Committee cannot be left out of an initiative like the Earth Hour, said the Rio 2016 Committee president, Carlos Arthur Nuzman.
