It was a sprint start that Usain Bolt would pleased with. In the first hour of online sales of tickets for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games to residents of Brazil, about 120,000 were snapped up. After the first eight hours of the first-come-first-served phase on Tuesday (20 October) around 240,000 tickets had been sold.

This second phase of ticket sales to Brazilian residents – in which about two million tickets are available – follows a first stage that comprised two periods during which fans could register and request tickets on the Rio 2016 Tickets Portal, with over-subscribed events being allocated by draws. More than two million tickets were sold during the first phase.

As well as tickets left over after the first phase, the first-come-first-served phase is offering tickets to sessions that were previously sold out. These are tickets that have been returned by fans, via the official ticket resale programme, or by international sports organisations and sponsors.

Overseas fans should enter into contact with the authorised ticket reseller (ATR) in their territory. Click here to see the list of ATRs for the Olympic Games and here for the list of ATRs for the Paralympic Games.

In total, approximately 7.5 million tickets to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games are available for spectators, while about 3.3 million tickets for the Paralympic Games will be on sale.
