With the logo of Rios bid to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games clearly displayed on his car, Brazilian Alberto Valério won the first of two GP2 races held at the Silverstone circuit this weekend in England. Since the 2009 GP2 Series began in May, the driver has shown his support for the Rio 2016 bid in all rounds of the competition and continues to be vocal about his dream for the Games.
The race in England was Valérios first victory of the 2009 season. The Brazilian started in second position on the grid but overcame Frenchman Romain Grosjean to take the lead early in the race. The GP2 series is the main feeder category for Formula One.
"I am very happy with my victory. It is extremely difficult to win a race in GP2," said Valério.
"I strongly support the Rio 2016 bid because I believe that the Olympic and Paralympic Games will be a huge inspiration for young people across Brazil and South America. Brazilians love sport and the time is right for Rio and Brazil to host the worlds greatest sporting event, he said.
Following his victory at Silverstone, Valério has risen to seventh place in the standings with sixteen points. The next GP2 race will be held at the Nürburgring, Germany, on 11th July.
