The Rio 2016™ Olympic and Paralympic Games are catalysing an on-going transformation of Rio de Janeiro’s urban mobility, the BRT Transcarioca being one of its best examples. The construction of the dedicated articulated buses expressway will benefit residents of Rio´s North Zone neighbourhoods such as Penha and Madureira as it will link Barra da Tijuca to Tom Jobim International Airport located in Ilha do Governador. Travel time to the neighbourhood that will be the heart of the Rio 2016™ Games will be reduced by 60% with the expressway.

With 45 stations, the Transcarioca is expected to be ready by 2014. The route of about 39 km will have four underpasses, ten overpasses and nine bridges as well as urbanisation projects for the neighbouring areas and the duplication of the existing lanes. The buses will be integrated with the metro, trains and bicycle paths and 400 thousand passengers are expected to use the expressway daily. The city will have three other BRT systems: the Transoeste, already in service, the Transolímpica and the Transbrasil.
