Agreement signed by Governor Sérgio Cabral and Mayor Eduardo Paes paves the way for major expansion of Rio de Janeiros Metro Line 1
The State and City Governments of Rio today signed an Agreement to extend Metro Line 1 to Barra da Tijuca in the citys West Zone. The Agreement, signed at the Palácio da Cidade, commits the City authorities to submit a draft law to the Municipal Council to allow the purchase of surplus unused real estate from the metro system in Rio to be used for the development. The State Government guarantees use of the sums raised from the sale of these areas to help fund the Line 1 extension.
Public transport is a priority for the State Government of Rio and this partnership with the Municipal authorities guarantees the viability of the expansion of the citys metro system. This is a major step forward in the implementation of our transport plan ahead of the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, said Governor Cabral. The signing ceremony was also attended by the President of the Municipal Council of Rio, Jorge Fellipe, and another 30 municipal councilors.
