Pelé, Maradona, Garrincha, Messi... the kids involved in the Rio 2016 education programme will be in good company when they take part in the latest Transforma sports festival on Monday (10 August). The venue will be the legendary Maracanã Stadium – which will host the Rio 2016 opening and closing ceremonies, and Olympic football matches – but this time it will not be the national game on centre stage.
About 400 school children will be playing a range of Olympic and Paralympic sports on the hallowed turf, with rugby, hockey, archery, golf, tennis, fencing, volleyball, sitting volleyball and goalball on the menu. And between 9.30am and 5pm, anyone who is doing the Maracanã Tour – one of the most popular tourist attractions in Rio – will be able to take part in the event.
It will be the fourth Transforma sports festival, which are held in different locations around the city to promote new sports and the Olympic and Paralympic values to people of all ages. The Rio 2016 education programme reaches about one million students in 2,200 schools.
