The first infrastructure works that are part of Rio de Janeiro’s Port Area Revitalisation Plan are already underway. During the Rio 2016™ Olympic and Paralympic Games, thousands of fans will arrive from transatlantic ships which will serve as tourist accommodations. The region will also host one of the Games Media Villages.
The goal is to reintegrate the degraded Port Area into the city. Rio´s City Hall gave the revitalisation the name Porto Maravilha. The main challenge is to modernise the area while preserving its identity. The Rio Art Museum (MAR), currently under construction in the area, is one of the symbols of the new phase.
