FIFA has announced the match schedule for the football tournament at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, with both the women’s and men’s finals to be played at the legendary Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, on 19 and 20 August respectively.

The opening match, which will be a game from women’s Group E, will take place in the Olympic Stadium in Rio at 13.00 local time on 3 August, two days before the opening ceremony.

As well as the two stadiums in Rio, there will be five other co-host cities: Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Manuas, Salvador and São Paulo.

While the full line-up for the tournament has to be completed before the draw can be made, FIFA has confirmed that – as at the London 2012 Games – the hosts have been drawn as A1 and E1 in their respective tournaments.

Brazil’s men will play their first two group matches in the nation’s capital, Brasília, before moving to Salvador for their third and final pool encounter. Brazil’s women will play their first two group games in Rio’s Olympic Stadium before flying north to the Amazonian city of Manaus for their final pool match. Both Brazil’s teams will play semi-finals at the Maracanã if they win their groups and progress through the quarter-finals.

Nine nations are already confirmed for the 16-team men’s Olympic tournament: Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Portugal, Fiji, Mexico and Honduras. Six countries have already booked their slots in the 12-team women’s Olympic tournament: Brazil, Colombia, Germany, France, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
