The Youth Arena, Rio Olympic Veldodrome and the Olympic Aquatics Stadium are the Rio 2016 Games venues that have shown the most advances after the city government released monthly figures and photos showing construction progress (see below). Barra Olympic Park, the heart of the Games, is now 97 per cent complete, up two per cent from the previous figures in December.
The velodrome, which will host the track cycling test event between 29 April and 1 May, is now 80 per cent complete, compared with 76 per cent in December. The new photos also show that the lanes have been painted in the swimming pool where the likes of Michael Phelps and Chad le Clos will go into battle inside the Olympic Aquatics Stadium in August.
At Dedodoro Olympic Park, the second largest venue cluster, the Youth Arena has made the most progress. The venue – which will host preliminary women’s basketball games, the fencing section of modern pentathlon and wheelchair fencing – is now 80 per cent complete, compared with 75 per cent in December.
The city government, which is project managing the construction of the two Olympic Parks, also confirmed that Carioca Arena 1 and the Olympic Hockey Centre – which have both already successfully hosted test events – are now 100 per cern complete.
