Who can carry the Rio 2016 Olympic torch?

By Rio 2016

Comedian Rafael Infante explodes some myths about the Olympic Torch Relay as organisers search for everyday Brazilian heroes to take part in the event

Who can carry the Rio 2016 Olympic torch?

The Rio 2016 Olympic Torch relay will pass through 300 Brazilian towns and cities (Rio 2016)

No, you don’t have to be a famous sports star or showbiz celebrity to carry the Olympic torch.

This is the message conveyed by a new video calling for everday Brazilian heroes to take part in the Rio 2016 Olympic Torch Relay next year. Ordinary heroes who make a difference in their community, who represent the best of Brazil.

Rafael Infante, a Brazilian actor famous for his part in the cult online comedy hit series Porta dos Fundos, took to the streets of Rio to explain the concept of the torch relay to Brazilians.

Rio 2016 and the three Olympic Torch Relay partners – Coca-Cola, Nissan and Bradesco – want the public to nominate people to become one of the 12,000 torch bearers who will carry the Olympic Flame about 12,500 miles through Brazil next year (the torch relay will start on 3 May ).

Potential torch bearers, who must be residents of Brazil, can be recommended via the following links (websites in Portuguese).
