What can you tell us about the basic concept adopted for Rio 2016 Olympic Park?

By Rio 2016

The concept of the Olympic Park follows the standard adopted by the cities that have already hosted or will host the 4 Olympiads held prior to 2016 Games:  Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2012. This concept will apply to the Rio 2016 project focusing on the establishment of a central Games area in the region of Barra da Tijuca. It is in this area that more than half of the sport disciplines will be held, within a radius of just 5 to 10 minutes from the Olympic Village, thus affording enhanced comfort to the athletes. Besides, this central design lowers the cost of transportation and security operations and allows proposing the Games with less costly and more feasible investments.

The project foresees the construction of an Olympic Park that will comprise 3 of the already existing venues (Multisport Arena, Maria Lenk Aquatic Park and the Velodrome) and 2 new competition venues: the National Tennis Center and the National Olympic Training Center.

The National Olympic Training Center will be a sport excellence center to be established not just for the development of Brazilian sport but of Latin America and the Caribbean region also. This center will comprise an indoor 40.000-m2 multisport pavilion and outdoor facilities such as pools, athletics tracks and multipurpose fields designed to accommodate 6 disciplines at Games time and 20 sports after the Games.
