What are the plans to improve city traffic during the 2016 Olympic Games?

By Rio 2016

Like every large city in the world, Rio de Janeiro faces problems with traffic jams on its public streets, especially during rush hour. These problems are a constant challenge for urban planners and they become even bigger when you intend to bring an event to the city the size of the Olympic Games.

In order to overcome these challenges a Special Traffic and Transportation Plan is being elaborated based on the premises of the Urban Transportation Director Plan to minimize current travel times as well as meet the needs of Olympic transit. Implementation of this plan will result in a legacy for Rio. Therefore, the benefits will go to the residents, the athletes and their delegations and the spectator public, interfering as little as possible in the city’s daily routine.

During the Games, as with the Rio 2007 - XV Pan-American Games, special traffic and transportation operations will be adopted, such as prohibiting the parking of any vehicle in the immediate area of stadiums and arenas, giving priority to the use of public transportation, and more.
