The torch used by Brazilian marathon runner Vanderlei Cordeiro de Lima to light the Olympic cauldron during the opening ceremony for the Rio 2016 Games is the main attraction in the Rio 2016 Official Auction.

Fans from around the world can now bid for the artefact that is signed by the Olympian. The torch and thousands of other Games-related and autographed items are now available to own by visiting www.officialauction.rio2016.com.

Own a piece of history: Rio 2016 memorabilia up for auction online

“This rare torch is without a doubt the most exceptional artefact that we have ever had the privilege to offer,” said Jon Curleigh, managing partner of Pursuit 3 Group, which manages the Rio 2016 Official Auction.

“We are truly honoured to have Brazil’s real hero, Vanderlei Cordeiro de Lima, share his spirit of the Games with millions of fans from around the world.”

Lima won the marathon bronze medal at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, although he was in first position when he was obstructed by a member of the public. He was subsequently awarded the Pierre de Coubertin Medal, the highest honour granted by the International Olympic Committee.

“It was an honor to light the cauldron at a crowded Maracanã and now I’m going to help to keep the Olympic flame alive. I know every person around the world will have the opportunity to own this special Torch, but I truly hope someone keeps it in Brazil,” said Vanderlei.

Memorabilia being offered from the first Olympic Games in South America includes flags from the opening and closing ceremonies, autographed match equipment and limited edition torches.
