The Olympic Games are a chance for superstars from different sports to cross paths, and it seems that two of the world’s most glamorous athletes may be set to meet at Rio 2016.
After Brazilian football idol Neymar told rio2016.com last week that he hopes to see Usain Bolt in action at the Olympic Stadium next year, the Jamaican sprint legend has revealed that the feeling is mutual.
“Neymar is a great player and I saw how popular he is in Brazil during the World Cup last year,” Bolt told rio2016.com. “It would be great to see him play on home soil in Brazil.”
Neymar made his admiration for Bolt clear at the London 2012 Olympic Games, where he imitated the sprinter's ‘Lightning Bolt’ celebration after scoring a free-kick against Belarus in Brazil’s second match.
While Bolt’s main focus in Rio will be on retaining the three Olympic titles he won at both the 2012 and 2008 Olympic Games, he intends to enjoy his last Olympic Games.
Asked which other sports he would like to see during the Games in Brazil, Bolt said: “For me, outside of athletics, it is always basketball and football. I watch a lot of (English) Premier League and NBA games and it will be good to see some of these star players or future star players compete at the Olympics. I will also watch the swimming and support the Jamaicans in those events.”
Bolt, who will turn 30 on the day of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games closing ceremony, is also keen to see another sporting great who is likely to be making her Olympic farewell.
“It would be great to see Serena Williams defend her singles title,” he said. “I have followed her career and she is really the star of women’s tennis.”
