Transport projects prepare Rio to receive the greatest sporting event in the world

More than 130km express ways exclusive for articulated buses and six new subway stations

Transport projects prepare Rio to receive the greatest sporting event in the world

First BRT model station is opened to visit at Barra da Tijuca (Divulgation/Casa Digital)

The infrastructure changes for which the city of Rio de Janeiro is going through are more evident every day. The construction of BRT systems and subway line 4 already underway are a proof of that. Until the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games™, the city will gain more than 130km of express ways and six subway stations linking the regions of the city to all competition sites.

The first BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) system was constructed in another Brazilian city, located in the South region: Curitiba. Nowadays, BRT system facilitates the life of people from more than 30 countries in the five continents. The operation structure resembles the one used in trains: exclusive or preferential roadways to buses; pre-paid system; non-cost line transfer; quick embark and disembark stations.

The implementation of BRTs will increase the high capacity system use within Rio’s metropolitan region. Currently, around 13% of journeys are made using the high capacity system. As of 2016, this percentage will be around 44%.

In Rio de Janeiro, four BRT lines are under construction by the state and city governments, according to the table below:

As of 2012, people will benefit from articulated buses and acclimatized stations all over the city. Transoeste, the first BRT express way to be concluded, will enable people from the most distant neighborhoods of the West Zone to have access to the heart of Games, Barra da Tijuca. In the Transcarioca case – with completion scheduled for December 2013 – the audience coming from the North Zone will have 45 embark and disembark stations at their disposal. For its part, Transbrasil – scheduled to be concluded on December 2014 – will link Avenida Brasil, one of the main access roads to the city, to the competition sites. Transolímpica will be concluded on December 2015, linking Deodoro with Barra da Tijuca. You can find more details at the City Government website: http://www.cidadeolimpica.com/en/
