President Lula and football legend Pelé welcome the members of Evaluation Commission in Rio

Traditional brazilian music and ambiance at dinner held for IOC Commission
An evening of music and entertainment set between the Urca and Sugar Loaf Mountains with a view on the statue of Christ the Redeemer was organised by the Rio 2016 Bid Committee to host the members of the IOC’s Evaluation Commission yesterday (30 April).

The event was hosted by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Rio 2016 President Carlos Arthur Nuzman, Governor Sérgio Cabral, Mayor Eduardo Paes, and several athletes including the “King of Football” - Pelé.

The Evaluation Commission members, led by Moroccan Nawal El Moutawakel, were welcomed by 350 members of the Beija-Flor samba school at the foot of the Urca Mountain. After riding the cable car to the top of Urca Mountain (next to Sugar Loaf), the group were greeted by authorities and athletes to the sound of Brazilian music. Among those present were Presidential Chief of Staff, Minister Dilma Rousseff, Sports Minister Orlando Silva, Tourism Minister Luiz Barretto, Foreign Minister Celso Amorim, Central Bank President Henrique Meirelles, and various Secretaries from the State and City governments.

Yachtsman and five time Olympic medal winner Torben Grael (Atlanta 96, Athens 2004, Los Angeles 84, Seoul 88 and Sydney 2000) made a toast on behalf of all Brazilian athletes. The event was attended by various Olympic and Paralympic medalists – including Gustavo Borges, Sandra Pires, Isabel Swan, Janeth Arcain, Robson Caetano, Marcus Vinícius Freire, Adriana Behar, Marcelo Ferreira, Sandro Laina, Daniel Dias and Terezinha Guilhermina.

At the end of the dinner, President Carlos Nuzman toasted the IOC Commission members and thanked all three levels of government and all those involved in the 2016 Bid for their ongoing efforts to bring the Games to Rio while Mayor Eduardo Paes spoke of the significance of hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Upon departure, Evaluation Commission members were further surprised when they witnessed the Rio 2016 bid logo formed by lights placed on the sands of Praia Vermelha below and subsequently greeted by hundreds of Brazilians dressed in white and holding candles, forming a corridor leading to the bus that would take them to their hotel and singing “Cidade Maravilhosa” (Marvelous City).
