The most competitive diving event of the Olympic Games, the men's 10m platform, lived up to the hype on Friday (19 August), with the high-profile divers taking risks and posting the highest scores in the eight diving events seen at Rio 2016 so far.
Tom Daley of Great Britain performed the highest-scoring dive of Rio 2016 so far when he collected 103.60 points for his forward four-and-a-half somersaults in the fourth round. This came in response to rival Qiu Bo of China whose fourth-round dive earned him 102.60 points.
Daley's consistent diving demonstrated the physical and mental strength he has developed since competing at his first Olympic Games in 2008. He won bronze in London 2012.
"I know I can do my dives like that every single time," Daley said, "so it's a matter of making sure I go out and give it my all."
Daley received a perfect 10 for his fifth dive, a forward reverse 3½ somersaults.
Qiu, the winner of three consecutive world championships titles since 2011, finished 7.10 points behind Daley with Chen Aisen of China in third. Qiu earned Olympic silver four years ago in London, while Daley took bronze.
China is seeking its seventh diving gold of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. One more would allow the Chinese to match their total from 2008 in Beijing, when they won seven of eight golds on home soil.
"The standards were set really high after this event, so I'm not surprised that someone finished above us," Chen said.

London 2012 Olympic Games gold medallist, David Boudia of the USA, qualified in fourth place after missing a 3.7-difficulty dive, the forward four-and-a-half somersaults, in the third round.
Saturday's action
