One week after sales began, Brazilian fans have applied for 1.2 million tickets for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. In a reflection of the sporting culture in the host nation, the most popular sports in terms of ticket requests have been volleyball, football and basketball.

Completing the list of the top 10 most sought-after sports, in the following order, are: artistic gymnastics, swimming, athletics, tennis, beach volleyball, judo and handball.

“We have received requests for all the sports in the programme and fans from throughout Brazil are buying tickets. This shows that these are not just Rio’s Games, but all of Brazil’s,” said Donovan Ferreti, Rio 2016’s ticketing director.

Sales to Brazilian residents opened on 31 March, while non-residents of Brazil can now find out who is the authorised ticket reseller (ATR) in their country.

Applications have come from residents of all the Brazilian states. The most have come from Rio de Janeiro, followed by the states that will co-host the Olympic football tournament: São Paulo, the Federal District, Minas Gerais, Amazonas and Bahia.

Residents of Brazil have until 30 April to apply on the ticket portal for tickets in the first draw. Everyone who applies by this date will have an equal chance of success in the draw, with the results announced in June. Only those who entered the first draw will be able to apply in the second draw, which opens July, with results in August.

In total, about 7.5 million tickets for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games will be put on sale, with more half being priced at 70 Brazilian reais (about 22 US dollars) or less.
