Even after 10km, this swim had a photo-finish

The day began with split-second dramatics after nearly two hours of open water freestyle in the men's 10k swim. The Netherlands' Ferry Weertman, named the 2015 European open swimmer of the year, hit the board in one hour, 52 minutes and 59.8 seconds — the same time as Greece's Spiros Gianniotis who was awarded silver.

The win gave the Netherlands a clean sweep in the 10km swim after Sharon van Rouwendaal won the women's race the previous day.

What a pair: Laura Trott and Jason Kenny

Great Britian's Laura Trott and Jason Kenny continued their country's golden streak in the velodrome. The London 2012 champion in the women's omnium defended her title and added to the gold medal she took in the team pursuit at the Rio Olympic Velodrome. With four Olympic golds, she becomes Team GB's most decorated female Olympian.

Kenny, who is engaged to Trott, took gold in the men's sprint, his third Olympic title at Rio 2016 and — incredibly — the sixth for Great Britian's powerhouse track cyling team since the men won every event except the omnium, in which they still claimed silver.

Biles goes big on last day of artistic gymnastics

A bonafide superstar, USA's Simone Biles was crowned the Olympic champion the floor exercise, winning her fourth gold medal at Rio 2016. Team-mate Aly Raisman won silver, capping a tremendous week that saw the women's gymnastic team claim eight individual medals for the USA as well as the all-around team gold

Sports Illustrated marked the occasion with a commemorative cover that included Biles and a couple USA swimmers who won 11 Olympic medals between them at Rio 2016.

Fans rock the ring with Brazil's first Olympic boxing win

Brazil's lightweight boxer Robson Conceição won his country's first Olympic gold in boxing, taking the men's -60kg division in a unanimous decision over France's Sofiane Oumiha.

From the gritty Boa Vista de São Caetano neighbourhood on the periphery of the tough north-eastern city of Salvador, to Rio 2016 where Conceição dazzled in front of the roaring, dancing, chanting fans who packed the 9,000-seat Riocentro Pavilion 6 to give the tournament a thrilling atmosphere. Brazilian fans counted down the final seconds, and when Conceição had his hand raised in victory, he dropped to his knees as the crowd erupted and shook the bleachers.

Ain't no party like a beach volleyball 'block party'

A raucous Copacabana crowd cheered Brazil's men into the gold medal match of the Rio 2016 beach volleyball tournament, and now Alison and Bruno say they feel the pressure. After beating the Netherlands in a tie-breaking third set in front of a capacity crowd, Alison celebrated the victory by collapsing and sobbing face-first in the sand. "It's not easy to start a game with the obligation to win another, but we reverse this pressure in a fun way and that's why we're in the Olympic finals," said Alison.

Medallist melts hearts

Christian Taylor and Will Claye of the USA completed another gold and silver sweep in the men's triple jump, repeating their feat at London 2012.

His silver medal assured, Claye then leapt into the stands to propose to his girlfriend and team-mate, hurdler Queen Harrison. She said yes in what was the fourth (!!!) Olympic Games proposal so far at Rio 2016 — at least that we know about.

Infrequent flier miles

Later on at Olympic Stadium, Canada's Derek Drouin was the only high-jumper to clear 2.38 metres, giving his country its first athletics medal in a field event in 84 years.

Don't try this at home

Lasha Talakhadze of Georgia set a new world record in the 105kg weightlifting division when he hauled a combined 473 kilos to win gold in an unexpected upset over the heavily favored Behdad Salimi of Iran. Talakhadze lifted 215kg on the snatch and another 258kg on the clean and jerk to set the benchmark.

Under-water unison sparkles for Russia

In stunning mermaid-like suits, synchronized swimmers Natalia Ishchenko and Svetlana Romashina of Russia successfully defended their Olympic title in the duet, continuing their country's unbroken streak of gold medals in the event since they first participated at Sydney 2000.

Keeping it in the family

Cancer survivor and six-time Olympic sailor Santiago Lange of Argentina won gold in the Nacra 17 mixed race with his crew-member Cecilia Carranza Saroli. Rio 2016 has been extraordinary for the 54-year-old who is not only the oldest in the sailing competition, but is also racing alongside his sons, Yago and Klaus, who are in the 49er class.

Battle of hockey's lions: Belgium vs Argentina

One are the #RedLions. The other are #LosLeones. And between Belgium and Argentina, a new Olympic hockey champion will be crowned.

Belgium reached the men's final for the first time in its history with a 3-1 win over the Netherlands, the gold-medal favourites since knocking off Australia. The win marked the first time Belgium overcame their European neighbour at a major tournament in 80 years. Argentina qualified with a 5-2 win over Germany, the London 2012 champions.

Bolt brings an electric charge even at cruise control

What would the day's highlights from Rio 2016 be without Usain Bolt? The Jamaican sprinter established himself as a triple-gold medal winner in the 100m on Monday and tomorrow he will go for another in the men's 200m.

At the Olympic Stadium today, Bolt cruised through the preliminaries with a time of 20.28 seconds. Canada's Andre De Grasse, the 100m bronze medallist, recorded the fastest overall time of 20.09.

Usain Bolt at Rio 2016: when is the 200m final and can the Jamaican break his world record?

The ever-entertaining and naturally charismatic Bolt even managed to get USA morning talk show host Ellen DeGeneres in on the fun.
