The IOC Official Debriefing of the London 2012 Games will take place from 17 to 21 November 2012 in Rio de Janeiro. The event is an important part of the knowledge transfer programme of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which will be attended by members of the London 2012, Sochi 2014, Rio 2016™ and PyeongChang 2018 Organising Committees (OCOGs), as well as representatives of the 2020 Candidate Cities and other Games stakeholders. It will give these future Games organisers the chance to learn from the experience and knowledge gained by their London counterparts during their seven years of preparation.
Carlos Arthur Nuzman, the President of Rio 2016™ Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee underlined the excellent learning opportunity this event will be for Rio 2016. “During this period we will have the opportunity to learn from the experience of our London colleagues to improve our work and deliver excellent Games in 2016”, he said.
The IOC’s knowledge management programme (OGKM) was created during the preparations for the Sydney 2000 Games and since then, has evolved into an integrated platform of services and documentation, which assists organizers in their Games preparations, lets them evaluate their progress and success, and helps to define the future of the Games. The IOC official debriefing is usually held at the end of each Olympic Games edition and is an integral part of this overarching knowledge transfer structure. The London 2012 Debriefing will be the seventh edition.
The event will consist of a combination of plenary discussions and side meetings, which will look at the planning, operational and technical elements of organising Olympic Games, such as sport, accommodation, transport, culture, education and logistics. There will also be sessions of the debriefing that will address the experience of participants at the Games such as the athletes, spectators, workforce and the media. A specific debriefing on technology has been running since Wednesday 14 November and it will conclude today, while there will be a Paralympic specific debriefing on Wednesday 21 November and Thursday 22 November.
The main event will be attended by Nawal El Moutawakel, IOC Vice-President and Chair of the IOC’s Rio 2016 Coordination Commission; Denis Oswald, Chairman of the IOC’s London 2012 Coordination Commission, Gilbert Felli, IOC Olympic Games Executive Director, Sebastian Coe, the President of the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG), and Paul Deighton, Chief Executive of LOCOG.
