A new world

The global phenomenon of slums is also experienced in Rio de Janeiro. Are there any plans to contain their expansion?

By Rio 2016

The issue of favelization is not just an environmental problem with impacts on slope deforesting. It is also an economic problem but,  above all, a social problem.  Several actions are already in progress targeting control and reversal this picture:

  • Joint Reforesting Efforts -  a program that targets environmental actions among low income populations
  • Establishment of Ecolimits – demarcation of a preservation area with fixed structures
  • The  Favela-Bairro Program – urbanization of communities, providing for street paving, transportation, electricity, gas, water and sewerage and involving dwellers in educational programs.
  • POUSO – Urbanistic and social orientation stations

The staging of the Games in  Rio de Janeiro would add new strength to these actions, establishing new work fronts towards the development of impoverished areas.
