Usain Bolt does a Muhammad Ali

Jamaican sprint superstar Usain Bolt added the 4x100m title to his 100m and 200m Rio 2016 gold medals, and becomes the first person to win all three events at three consecutive Olympic Games. "There you go, I'm the greatest," Bolt told reporters afterwards, bringing back memories of the late and indeed great Muhammad Ali. "I'm going to stay up late and have fun," he added, putting Rio's famous party scene on high alert.

High five for Felix

Allyson Felix won a fifth Olympic gold medal, making her the most successful female track and field athlete of all time, as the USA triumphed in the 4x100m final in 41.01 seconds. The Jamaican team, containing Elaine Thompson and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, was second in 41.36, while Britain took bronze in a national record 41.77. "It's really neat sharing with these special ladies. We had fun out there," said Felix.

Jolly British hockey sticks

Hollie Webb smashed home the winning shot to give Great Britain an unassailable 2-0 lead in a shoot-out, as Great Britain beat the defending champions and no.1 ranked team, the Netherlands, to win their first ever women's hockey gold medal. Fantastic scenes followed, as British players celebrated an unexpected victory.

Spanish joy in badminton

The world no.1 Carolina Marin of Spain earned her first Olympic badminton title when she beat Pusarla V. Sindhu of India 2-1 in the women's singles final. In the men's singles, Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia defeated two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan of China in their semi-final, avenging his losses to Lin in the previous two Olympic finals. In the men's doubles, China's Fu Haifeng and Zhang Nan beat Malaysia's Goh V. Shem and Tan Wee Kiong 2-1 for gold.

Esposito claims Australia's first pentathlon gold

"I knew this day was going to come when everything came together," Australia's Chloe Esposito said, after capturing gold in an Olympic record of 1,372 points. Esposito was solid throughout the five events of the pentathlon: seventh after swimming, sixth through fencing, up to fourth following equestrian. Her best event is the running-shooting combination in the finale, so she knew gold was still within reach. "It's been a tough road, especially this year I had a few injuries," she said. "Nothing was easy." Elodie Clouvel of France captured silver and Oktawia Nowacka of Poland earned bronze.

Germany give legendary coach a proper send-off

Germany defeated Sweden 2-1 at the MaracanĂ£ Stadium to win the women's Olympic football title for the first time, and give coach Silvia Neid a perfect farewell present. The Swedes had already knocked out hosts Brazil and defending champions USA, but Germany were too strong and a strike from Dzsenifer Marozsan and Linda Sembrant's own goal did the damage.

USA rule the pool

Ashleigh Johnson made nine saves and Kiley Neushul scored three times as the USA extended their dominance in women's water polo with a 12-5 win over Italy in the final. The Americans stretched their Olympic Games winning streak to 22 games: they also won gold at London 2012, and became the only two-time winner since the women's tournament was added to the Olympic Games in 2000.

Colombia's queen of BMX reigns on

Colombia's Mariana Pajon defended her title in the women's BMX final and then raised her bike in the air to acknowledge the adoring crowds waving the yellow, blue and red of her home country. Pajon is a star in Colombia, so much so that a BMX track has been named in her honour. The USA ended its gold medal drought in BMX as Connor Fields won the men's Olympic final in the American-born sport.

USA set up shot at triple crown

In a repeat of the last two Olympic finals, the USA men's basketball team beat Spain 82-76 in the semi-finals and will take on Serbia in their third straight Olympic gold medal game, on Sunday. Klay Thompson scored 22 points for the Americans, Kevin Durant added 14 points and Kyrie Irving had 13. Pau Gasol scored 23 points for Spain, who tested the USA but again had to settle for coming a close second.

Russians reign on in synch

Russia extended its gold medal streak in synchronised swimming by winning its fifth consecutive title in the team event. The gold medal was the second won by Russia at Rio 2016 following the victory of Natalia Ishchenko and Svetlana Romashina in the duets. By winning another teams gold medal, the pair drew level with their compatriot Anastasia Davydova on five gold medals, as the most decorated synchronised swimmers in Olympic history.
