"The feeling of anticipation grew and our levels of adrenaline were sent to new heights as we made our way onto the Copacabana Beach stage. As we made it through the bridge leading straight from the hotel onto the stage, we could feel all the excitement no drug could ever produce. We wished each other luck before stepping out in front of the crowd, or rather 'opening the cage', as Keith Richards would say", says Wood in the book.
The musician recalls the feeling of excitement conveyed by the millions of fans during the show in Copacabana.
"When we stepped onto stage B and slid through to the middle of the crowd, we felt utterly overwhelmed by the deafening noise. We had never heard anything like that. It was only then that the four of us came to understand the meaning of being in the middle of two million people," wrote the 60-year-old musician, a member of the Rolling Stones since 1975.
Despite the real sea of people, the show ran smoothly and turned out to be one of the greatest of all time.
One of Brazil's major postcard sceneries and popular leisure area, Copacabana Beach has traditionally served as backdrop for musical and festive events, such as New Year's Eve and sport competitions. Having staged the beach volleyball, triathlon and marathon swimming competitions during the Pan American Games Rio 2007, the famous beach is now part of Rio's bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games.
