The Spanish newspaper El Mundo has made an imaginary merger between Rio and São Paulo to create the “City of the Year”, symbolizing the development of Brazil. The election of Rio de Janeiro to host 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games was highlighted by the newspaper that described Rio as “the place where all Brazilian cultures are mixed together”.

São Paulo was described as the heart of the Brazilian economy. To the Spanish newspaper, these two cities are “laboratories of the future” and represent the significance and the growing political force of a diversified and multiracial country, which is proud of its own achievements.

The report also makes a special reference to Brazil’s growth during the administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
