After nine days of impressive sporting performances on snow and ice, the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games are officially over. The closing ceremony held on Sunday night at the Fisht Olympic Stadium marked the end of the competitions that were held in the Russian city and nearby mountains since the opening ceremony on 7 March. The event was marked by the Paralympic values of determination, courage, inspiration and equality. Now winter sport focus will turn to PyeongChang, in South Korea, which will host the next Games.
In Sochi, Russia led the medal standings since the beginning, collecting 30 golds, 28 silvers and 22 bronzes. The host country was followed by Germany and Canada, with tallies of of 9/5/1 and 7/2/7. Brazil took part in the Winter Games for the first time and ended without medals.
As PyeongChang 2018 prepares for the next Winter Games, the next Summer Games are getting even closer. The Marvellous City is working at full speed to host South America’s first Games: the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
