With a score two points ahead of her closest competitor, USA gymnast Simone Biles became the women's individual all-round Olympic champion on Thursday (11 August). She put up a remarkable total of 62.189 with the overall highest scores on floor, beam and vault. In the uneven bars, she was seventh.

"I'm not the next Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps, I'm the first Simone Biles," said the most-decorated gymnast ever.

"I'm not a celebrity. I'm just Simone Biles, but it's amazing to be recognised for all of this success for myself and for Team USA," said the 19-year-old three-time world champion. "To me, I'm just the same Simone. I just have two Olympic Gold medals now. I feel like I did my job tonight."

The gold medal is the 990th in USA Olympic history. The individual gold follows the USA team gold on 9 August. Aly Raisman, also of the USA, won silver with 60.098, Aliya Mustafina of Russia won bronze with 58.665 and Brazil's Rebeca Andrade finished 11th.

Biles said the feeling was overwhelming but she kept herself stoic.

"I'm very excited and relieved," she said. "You never know the feeling until it hits you. I kept reminding myself to do the routines I had practised, which I did. When Aly started crying, I had to tell her to stop, because I knew I'd start crying. I had to focus. It means the world to me.

"I was thinking I've finally done it, and when that hits you, you can't stop the emotions. I was very proud."

Raisman, 22, nearly broke down following her final rotation.

"Being in Brazil, and not in the USA, you don't expect many people to be cheering for you or to get a standing ovation so it was very emotional," she said. "The crowd — this was the best arena and atmosphere I have ever been in. It was just incredible. It's a moment I will never forget.

She said her ambition was to win silver tonight.

"No one goes into this thinking they can beat Simone," said Raisman. "I'm sure most people don't go into it thinking they can beat Bolt either."

Dubbed the 'final five' because their team co-ordinator Martha Karolyi will retire after Rio 2016, Raisman said the team-members that comprise USA gymnasts are very close.

"We are like sisters," she said of Biles. "I told her before today, I want you to win and I want second."
