Roger Federer prepares to go after unprecedented triple at Rio 2016 Olympic Games

The Olympic tennis tournament will deliver big on talent when the Rio 2016 Games kick off in August. Switzerland and Spain announced their teams for the Games on Thursday (16 June) and the star names rolled off the tongue. Roger Federer, Martina Hingis and Rafael Nadal were among those confirmed for the competition, which will take place between 6 and 14 August at the Olympic Tennis Centre in Barra Olympic Park.

Federer, who will be leading a six-strong Swiss team, is in contention for an unprecedented Olympic triple, competing in the men's singles, men's doubles with Stan Warwinka and mixed doubles alongside Hingis. Also in the team is Belinda Bencic who will partner Hingis in the women’s doubles, and Timea Bacsinszky and Xenia Knoll, who will make up the other women’s doubles pair.

Alongside Rafa Nadal on the Spanish men’s team will be David Ferrer, who won last year's Rio Open, along with Roberto Bautista and Albert Ramos, all contesting the men’s singles event. Garbiñe Muguruza and Carla Suárez Navarro will be compete in the women’s singles event.

The doubles women’s pairings will be Carla Suárez/Garbiñe Muguruza and Anabel Medina Garrigues/Arantxa Parra Santoja. For the men’s doubles, Marc López will partner Nadal and Roberto Bautista will play with Ferrer.

In accordance with International Tennis Federation (ITF) rules, the mixed doubles teams have until 9 August to be finalised, after the first three days of the competition. Captain of the Spanish women’s team Conchita Martínez has already announced the set-up for the women’s doubles.

“The decision is to have Rafael Nadal/Garbiñe Muguruza and Carla Suárez/David Ferrer, but we are going to wait until the deadline to see what condition the players are in.”

Out of those confirmed for the tournament at Rio 2016, there is gold medal pedigree with Rafael Nadal in the singles (Beijing 2008) and in the doubles Federer/Wawrinka (Beijing 2008). While this will be Federer’s fifth consecutive Olympic Games, Martina Hingis is returning to the competition 20 years after her first Olympic appearance, at Atlanta 1996. This will be Nadal’s third Olympic appearance after Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008.

These are the names sent by the countries’ National Olympic Committees to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which is yet to confirm the athletes’ participation.
