Brazilian sport now has a brand new facility for discovering and developing young talent for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This Wednesday, 28 October, was inauguration day for a new sports gym in Mangueira’s Vila Olímpica, with capacity for training around 6,500 young people (7- to 17-year-olds) every day in sports such as futsal, volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, boxing, judo and wrestling. The inauguration ceremony was attended by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Sports Minister Orlando Silva, State Governor Sérgio Cabral, Mayor Eduardo Paes, President of the Rio 2016 Committee Carlos Arthur Nuzman, Rio 2016 General Secretary Carlos Roberto Osório and Mangueira Samba School President Ivo Meirelles.

The new gym has an regulation multi-sports court, seating for 300 and an electronic scoreboard. Investment in this new facility, which will be open daily from 7.00 am to 10.00 pm, is R$1.1 million. “It looks just like any other sports court, but this space will foster healthy and motivated young people. And, who knows, perhaps players who will compete for a medal in the Rio 2016 Olympics. Mangueira will have a carnival of citizenship, 24 hours a day,” said President Lula.

For the President of the Rio 2016 Committee, inauguration of the new facility is like a gift to the city after the announcement of Rio’s selection to host the 2016 Olympics. “Brazilian people are in love with sport and showed this with their beautiful celebration when Rio de Janeiro was chosen to host the 2016 Games. Now the children of Mangueira will be able to enjoy even more of the benefits that come from taking part in sports. The gym is wonderful, and will certainly nurture future champions,” said Carlos Arthur Nuzman.
