Rio de Janeiro ready to host matches of the indoor soccer world championship

By Rio 2016

Ten days after being confirmed as the host country for FIFA's World Cup 2014, Brazil consolidates its position as the base for important international competitions. And Rio de Janeiro plays an essential role in this setting.

Last Friday, November 9, Fifa confirmed Brazil as the host country of the 2008 Indoor Soccer World Championship, which will be held from October 1 to 19 next year. Three cities are bidding to host the competition matches: Rio de Janeiro, Brasília and Jaraguá do Sul (Santa Catarina). Representatives of the entity that controls soccer in the world have already visited Rio, which will probably be the headquarters, hosting the final game. In the "Wonderful City", the matches will be held in Rio's Multipurpose Arena and in Maracanãzinho, two venues used in Pan American Games Rio 2007.

- Brazil is the country where indoor soccer practice started and the country has all the necessary structure to organize the best Championship of all times. This Championship is compatible with the country's capacity to organize large events - said Aécio de Borba Vasconcelos, president of the Brazilian Indoor Soccer Confederation to website CBFnews.

20 countries will take part in the competition, representing the five continents. The tournament will have the largest number of participants since FIFA started recognizing it, in 1989. The sport was among the ones that drew the largest number of fans in RIO 2007. For the first time, the discipline was included in an edition of the Pan American Games.
