The documentation consists of a letter of introduction by the Brazilian Olympic Committee, a letter of registration and guarantee signed by both the Mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Cesar Maia, and the President of the Brazilian Olympic Committee, Carlos Arthur Nuzman, and letters of guarantee to host the Olympic Games signed by both the President of Brazil, Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva, and the Governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro State.
The deadline set by the IOC to file applicancy for the 2016 Olympic Games was last Thursday, September 13. According to the president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee, Carlos Arthur Nuzman, full support of the project by the federal, state and municipal government is an advantage of Rio's applicancy. "The unity of all three levels of government was essential to the success of the Rio 2007 Pan American and Parapan American Games and will be crucial to Rio's candidacy for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games", Nuzman stated.
Rio was chosen in September 2006 to represent Brazil in the competition to host the 2016 Olympic Games. The decision was unanimous by the Brazilian Olympic Committee General Assembly. The General Assembly members considered that, after hosting the Pan American and Parapan American Games, Rio has become Brazil's most qualified city to be an applicant, both in terms of organizational experience and sporting facilities. All the cities aspiring to host the 2016 Olympic Games shall complete, by January 14, 2008, the questionnaire sent by the International Olympic Committee and put forward other guarantees required by the entity.
COI will analyze these documents and announce on June 2008, in Athens (Greece), the cities that will become official candidates to host the 2016 Olympic Games. The host city will be announced in Denmark on October 2, 2009.
