Last Sunday, 1 July , Rio de Janeiro was awarded the World Heritage status, in the urban cultural landscape category. It is the first time an entire city has been recognised with this honour granted by UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation). Its candidature was approved during the 36th Session of the World Heritage Committee held in Saint Petesburg, in Russia.

Congratulations, Rio! Congratulations, Brazil!
